Dog Control Statistics
LATEST (updated July 2023): Click Dog Control Statistics (XLSX) (XLSX,6MB) to download the full dataset.
The below links contain statistics about dog control throughout New Zealand. A similar set of pages is provided for each of those territorial authorities that have dog control statistics available. These may be accessed through each council's main profile page (PLEASE NOTE: This data is to 31 May 2019 only. For 2020, 2021 and 2022 data, please refer to Excel spreadsheet linked from this web page, above).
The data used to develop the above profiles came from three sources:
- the National Dog Database (NDD) from the Department of Internal Affairs
- dog-related injury claims and their cost from the Accident Compensation Corporation
- prosecutions and dog destruction orders under the Dog Control Act 1996 from the Ministry of Justice
The information has been taken as reported from these sources. In reviewing the information shown in these profiles readers should be mindful that the information has:
- only been presented in a consistent way; and
- has not been analysed or adjusted to allow comparisons between councils to be made.
