Notes

  1. All years presented are as at 30 June.
  2. The "total prosecutions" count equals the number of charges prosecuted under the Dog Control Act 1996.
  3. The "total dog destruction orders" count equals the number of charges under the Dog Control Act 1996 that resulted in a dog destruction order.
  4. If a chart and table are missing values, there were no prosecutions or dog destruction orders recorded in the given year(s).
  5. The MoJ statistics are broken down by "prosecuting agency", which is often (but not always) a territorial authority. Where a prosecuting agency is not a territorial authority, the agency figures have been added to the council totals based upon the agency's geographic location.
  6. The MoJ statistics given to the Department of Internal Affairs, some of which have been presented here, do not include any personal identifying information.
  7. The Department of Internal Affairs disclaims and excludes all liability for any claim, loss, demand or damages of any kind whatsoever (including for negligence) arising out of, or in connection with, the use of this information.
  8. Visit dogsafety.govt.nz for information about being safe around dogs.
