About Local Boards
With the creation of the Auckland Council, twenty-one local boards have been established. Local boards enable local representatives to be elected to make decisions at a community level.
The geographic areas of local boards have been established on the same principles as those used for the wards, taking into account:
- communities of interest
- local service delivery
- the ratio of elected members to population
The boundaries of each ward coincide with the boundaries of one or more local boards. Some local board areas are further divided into ‘subdivisions’ for electoral purposes, to ensure fair geographical representation on the local board.
