How do I know what my council is doing?

Each council should have available at its offices, a copy of the local governance statement which should include information about how they will encourage/support Māori to participate.

Publicising council policies

Following local government elections, councils must publicise any policies they have for working with Māori (e.g., established Memoranda of Understanding. (Local Government Act 2002, see section 40)

Annual report of activities

A council’s annual report must detail the efforts the council has made to provide opportunities for Māori to contribute to council decision-making processes. (Local Government Act 2002, see Clause 21 of Schedule 10)
