Local Government in New Zealand - Local Councils

Building relationships is key for sustainable communities

Building relationships between councils, various organisations and groups like iwi, hapū and whānau is important for encouraging effective participation with Māori.

How to get involved

If you are interested in being more involved in local government decision-making, contact your local and regional council in your region. You may wish to contact your iwi liaison officer from your council, or invite your local councillor to come along to your school, marae, or community group meeting to discuss how they engage with Māori.

More information

More information about the involvement of Māori in local government decision-making may be found in the Know-How Guides on Decision-Making. Visit the Local Government New Zealand website to purchase a copy of the Guide.
