Taupo District Council Activities

Council Purpose

The purpose of the Taupo District Council is to enable democratic local decision-making to promote the social, economic, evironmental and cultural well-being of the Taupo District in the present and for the future. The Council has overall responsibility and accountability for the proper direction and control of the Council's activities in pursuit of Community outcomes. This responsibility includes:
  • Formulating the District's strategic direction in conjunction with the community - now the Long Term Community PLan (LTCCP) and reporting on progress made to achieving identified Community Outcomes.
  • Determining the services and activities to be undertaken by the Council
  • Managing various regulations and up-holding the law, inclusing the formulation and enforcement of bylaws
  • Managing local infrastructure inclusing network infrastructure (e.g. roads, sewage disposal, water, stormwater) and community infrastructure (public library, parks and recreational facilites)
  • Advocating on behalf of the local community with central government, other local authorities and other agencies
  • Environmental Management through the Taupo District Plan
  • Ensuring local communities are encouraged to be part of the decision making processes of local government
  • Ensuring effective succession of Elected Members
