Kaikoura District Council Activities

Council Purpose

The purpose of the Kaikoura District Council is to enable democratic local decision-making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of Kaikoura District and its residents in the present and the future. In meeting its purpose the Kaikoura District Council has a variety of roles:

formulating the District’s strategic direction in conjunction with the community – now known as the Long Term Council Community Plan
facilitating solutions to local needs
advocacy on behalf the local community with central government, other local authorities and other agencies
development of local resources
management of local infrastructure including network infrastructure (e.g. roads, sewage disposal, water, stormwater and community infrastructure (libraries, parks and recreational facilities)
environmental management
providing for the future needs of the Kaikoura District.
