Auckland Regional Council Activities

Council Purpose

The purpose of the Auckland Regional Council (ARC) is to enable democratic local decision making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well being of the Auckland region in the present and for the future. In meeting its purpose the ARC has a variety of roles:

Facilitating solutions to regional needs
Advocacy on behalf the regional community with central government, other local authorities and other agencies
Transport strategy, passenger transport, public transport information
Maritime management
Provision and management of regional parks including Ericsson Stadium
Environmental management
Regional natural and cultural heritage
Regional biosecurity
Planning for the future growth of the region
Managing risks from hazards

In fulfilling its purpose the ARC exercises powers and fulfils responsibilities conferred on it by legislation - a list of key legislation is included as Appendix A.
