Wellington Regional Council Activities
Council Purpose
Greater Wellington’s purpose is to enable democratic decision-making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of the Wellington region in the present and for the future. In meeting this purpose Greater Wellington has a variety of responsibilities:- management of local infrastructure, including network infrastructure (public transport, water supply and flood protection)
- management of community infrastructure (regional parks and recreation facilities)
- environmental management
- land management
- navigation and safety of the region’s harbours and coastal waters
- planning for the future needs of the region
- advocacy on behalf of the local community with central government, other local authorities and other agencies.
