Chatham Islands Council Activities

Council Purpose

The purpose of the Chatham Islands Council is to allow democratic local decision making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of its communities in the present and for the future. In meeting its purpose the Chatham Islands Council has a variety of roles:
  • Facilitating solutions to local needs
  • Advocacy on behalf of the local community with central government, other local authorities and other agencies
  • Development of local resources
  • Management of local infrastructure including network infrastructure (e.g. roads, Waitangi sewage disposal, Waitangi water supply, stormwater, flood and Te Whanga control works) and community infrastructure (libraries, parks and recreational facilities)
  • Environmental Management
  • Planning for the future needs of the Chatham Islands.

Council Activities

During 2003/04 the Council advised its community that it undertook the following activities. N.B. There is no single agreed standard set of categories for councils to describe their activities.Council activities listed below are not necessarily in order of preference or priority.
