Each of New Zealand's 85 regional and territorial councils has its own section of this website.

In the 'All councils' section of this website, you can find all 85 local councils listed:
- Alphabetically A-Z.
- By Type.
- By Region.
Click on the council you are interested in, and you will go to that council's section of this website, starting with its "About' page.
What's in each councils section of this website
Each council’s section is organised alike, having an ‘About’ introductory page with summary information such as contact details, Mayor, number of Councillors and key statistics.
Each council’s About page has a submenu with links to five subsections of more detailed information about the council. These subsections are:
- Community Profile.
- Election Statistics.
- Councils Activities.
- Councils Organisation.
- Finances.
What's in each subsection
Each sub-section of council information is organised alike, and described below.
- Community Profile – a statistical snapshot of the community the council serves, with information from the 2006 Census of Population and Dwellings, the 2001 Household Expenditure Survey, and the New Zealand Business Demographic Statistics.
- Election Statistics – of the 2001, 2004, and soon to be 2007, council elections, sourced from the Local Authority Elections Statistics, The Department of Internal Affairs.
- Council Activities – the council’s own description of its purpose and activities, drawn from its Local Governance Statement and Long Term Council Community Plan.
- Council Organisation – information about the council’s management structures, staffing and council-controlled organisations, with additional pages of information about structure, remuneration, collaboration arrangements and consultation arrangements and techniques.
- Finances – financial data comprising council assets and liabilities, operating revenue, operating expenditure, capital expenditure, revenue by activity, expenditure by activity, rates revenue, projected revenue and expenditure.
Information sources used
The data used to develop the council information sections have been derived from a variety of sources: Statistics New Zealand, the Local Government Surveys by The Department of Internal Affairs, Council Local Governance Statements and Long Term Council Community Plans. The information has been taken as reported from these various sources. In reviewing the information, readers should be mindful that the information:
- Has only been presented in a consistent way.
- Has not been analysed or adjusted to allow comparisons between councils to be made.
